梅兰尼·格里菲斯1957年8月9日生于美国纽约。因为母亲是老牌女星蒂比·海德莉，所以青少年时代已在一些影片中出演小角色。1975年正式踏入影坛，出演了几部影片后于1981年退出银幕，进入演艺学校深造。1984年复出，并以《替身》中的大胆演出引起多方关注，1986年在《散弹露露》中的另类角色更令人眼亮。1988年以《打工女郎》荣获金球奖影后桂冠及奥斯卡提名，从此跃升好莱坞一线女星之列。到达事业巅峰期之后，梅兰妮接片很少，但都是精品，比如《风月俏佳人》和《洛丽塔》，另一方面随着年龄的增大她也有心退出娱乐圈，从2004年起就没签拍片合同。
